In August 2018, Paul Scott asked the Durham City Council to paint a dilapidated crosswalk in the McDougald Terrace housing project in the Pan-Africanist colors red, black, and green—a way to “instill self-pride” in the impoverished and violence-plagued community, he says.

“I thought it would be a good look for McDougald Terrace,” Scott says. “Maybe if gang members saw those colors, they would lay down their gang colors.”

Scott has often resorted to untraditional means to effect change. A decidedly unorthodox Baptist pastor, former Herald-Sun columnist, and founder of the Black Messiah Movement—which combines black liberation theology with social activism and argues that black communities need to become their own saviors—he spends Sunday afternoons in West Durham handing out books that celebrate black history.

Scott was incensed.

“The only snap, crackle, and pop you hear in the hood are gunshots,” he says. “Carrboro [in 2017] does an LGBTQ crosswalk, and there’s no controversy. It was applauded. But if we want a crosswalk celebrating black history in McDougald Terrace, we have to go through bureaucracy, and it’s not fair.”

Fourth. Black liberation theology. This is actually a thing.

Black theology, or black liberation theology, refers to a theological perspective which originated among African-American seminarians and scholars, and in some black churches in the United States and later in other parts of the world. But if they overcome oppression how will they justify being entitled to welfare and affirmative action?

Dwight Hopkins, a professor at the University of Chicago Divinity School, says black liberation theology often portrays Jesus as a brown-skinned revolutionary. He cites the words of Mary in the Magnificat — also known as the “Song of Mary” — in which she says God intends to bring down the mighty and raise the lowly. Hopkins also notes that in the book of Matthew, Jesus says the path to heaven is to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick and the prisoners. And the central text for black liberation theology can be found in Chapter 4 of Luke’s gospel, where Jesus outlines the purpose of his ministry.

“Jesus says my mission is to eradicate poverty and to bring about freedom and liberation for the oppressed,” Hopkins says. “And most Christian pastors in America skip over that part of the book.”

Hopkins attends Trinity United Church of Christ, where Rev. Wright just retired as pastor. In the now-famous sermon from 2003, Wright said black people’s troubles are a result of racism that still exists in America, crying out, “No, no, no, not God bless America! God damn America — that’s in the Bible — for killing innocent people.”

According to Hopkins, that was theological wordplay — because the word “damn” is straight out of the Bible and has a specific meaning in the original Hebrew.
