I watched the music video for “Hello Kitty” in shock as Lavigne danced around in a giant tutu bedazzled with cupcakes, ate sushi and waved to adoring fans whilst being followed by a small flock of seemingly identical Asian backup dancers. Because all of that is just so ‘kawaii,’ a term used to describe something cute in Japanese.

But you know what’s not cute? The cultural appropriation of a culture because of an individual’s ignorance.

While many news organizations such as CNN and ABC News have called into question whether or not the video is racist, Lavigne, 29, took to her Twitter account to defend herself: “RACIST??? LOLOLOL!!! I love Japanese culture and I spend half of my time in Japan. I flew to Tokyo to shoot this video…”

In the article “Avril Lavigne Says Her ‘Hello Kitty’ Video Is Not Racist” by ABC News, her rep explained, “the video is an homage to all the things she loves about Japan.” Those specific things being “food, fashion, fun!”

I agree with Lavigne and her “camp.” The singer isn’t racist. This is a woman who claims to love Japanese culture and wants to celebrate it publicly. However, when you fail to understand the true culture you claim to adore, you’re perpetuating not just your own ignorance, but also the stereotypes that falsely portray that culture.

Simply put, ignorance is what makes her video racist.
