The irony. I regard Trump winning as a negative. Yet I disagree with your general pessimism. By every objective metric the world is getting better and has been for centuries. We occasionally get a blip when things go backwards for a blip, but then they surge positive by a far greater extent. Bad news gets our attention more than the good news that goes unnoticed. As we get older we’re more inclined to regard any change as a negative, but we have to resist it. Change can be challenging, but it’s also what moves our species forward. Not all change is good, but we’re more inclined to exaggerate the negatives that come with change and underestimate its benefits.

Utter horse shit. You will note that the commenter doesn’t clue us in to what any of these “objective metrics” might be.

I also talk about solving the problem of overpriced housing. I thought tossing out all the illegal immigrants, deporting everyone who has been here less than 5 years (an arbitrary number – I’m willing to go 10, 20, 30 or more), and turning off all immigration might help reduce housing prices.

Now I realize I was wrong. Adam had a suggestion a while back and it makes a lot of sense.

So my proposed solution is simple: outlaw landlords. Make renting illegal. The only way to move into a home is to own a home. All of those investment properties would have to be sold to people who intended to live in the house itself. The market would correct itself in a very short time.

How to achieve it? Singapore successfully pulled it off by massively increasing stamp duty on the purchase of a second home, (around 300%). To prevent flipping a home to make a quick profit the government passed a law that a new purchase cannot be resold for five years. But my preferred option is to just outlaw landlords. So much more satisfying.

Coupled with a ban on immigration and incentives to send recent arrivals home with cash bribes, (say hi to Sweden), then young families would be able to easily enter the housing market at a reasonable cost. Of course, those who did manage to enter the market will see their properties plummet in value and will be underwater with the banks. Perhaps outlaw usury as well? Sounds like a win-win to me.
