The Great One thought maybe the podcast would record itself while he was watching movies, eating, drinking, and gaming. Apparently he was wrong. Again.
For someone who has never been wrong The Great One sure as shit is wrong about a great number of things.
On Thanksgiving after The Great One finished stealing land from Indians (it wasn’t hard, they were all drunk) he watched movies.
Father Goose with Cary Grant. If you have not seen this movie you need to see it now.
Southland Tales. If you have not seen this movie you are wrong. You have seen this movie because you are living in it. See this movie now.
In this episode I talk about themes found in Southland Tales the parallel the dystopia we live in.
That leads to talking about Australia’s latest effort to push dystopia to new depths.
Along the way I tangent to explain why I can’t deal with talking to normies. You may be surprised to find out it’s not because of sportsball.
Australia’s parliament has passed a law that will aim to do what no other government has, and many parents have tried to: stop children from using social media. The new law was drafted in response to what the Labor prime minister, Anthony Albanese, says is a “clear, causal link between the rise of social media and the harm [to] the mental health of young Australians.”
On Thursday, parliament’s upper house, the Senate, passed a bill by 34 votes to 19 banning children under 16 from social media platforms.
. . . . .
The number of responses increased dramatically, the Australian broadcaster ABC reported, after X owner Musk reposted a tweet by Albanese announcing that the bill would be introduced that day, writing, “Seems like a backdoor way to control access to the internet by all Australians.” Most of the submissions were a form response, the ABC reported, with fewer than 100 submissions made by interest groups.
. . . . .
A YouGov survey released on Tuesday this week showed 77% of Australians backed the ban, up from 61% in an August survey. Each of Australia’s eight state and territory leaders supports the ban, though Tasmania’s leader suggested it end at 14. The federal opposition supports the bill, claiming it would have done it sooner – it has promised to have a ban in place within 100 days if it wins next year’s election.
Here is the study referenced in the above link. As of this time I have not read the study.
Windows of developmental sensitivity to social media
In examining adolescence, it is additionally important to consider how sex interacts with the developmental stage. While some adolescent developmental processes (whether they be biological, cognitive, or social) are similar in both character and timing across sex, others show variation that needs to be accounted for. For example, females experience pubertal bodily changes earlier than do males, which can provoke further downstream social changes. Further, female life satisfaction drops earlier in adolescence and the risk of certain mental health problems such as depression, self-harm, and eating disorders is higher in adolescent females than in males. Research has highlighted differences between males and females in the links between social media use and well-being in adolescence in a small subset of the analyzed data, or other datasets. This study therefore also examines potential sex differences in how social media use relates to well-being across adolescent development.
To investigate the existence of developmental windows of sensitivity to social media, we first use cross-sectional data to examine whether adolescence might represent a period during which the association between well-being and social media is different in comparison to other life stages, and if differences between males and females are present during this time. Using longitudinal data, we then test the idea that there exist sex-specific windows of sensitivity to social media during adolescence itself.
