The People’s Republic of Fort Collins will be cracking down on the smoking ban. And will be voting on 7 March, 2017 on legislation to make it illegal to recline or lay down on public benches and chairs, illegal to sit on sidewalks and illegal to leave personal property untended in public.
And that is what First World Problems look like when you live in a city which is 85% white people.
In 2003, Fort Collins was one of the first communities in the state to designate bars, restaurants and workplaces as smoke-free. The city’s smoking ordinance was amended in 2006 to conform to the Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act, which helped the community regulate smoking in all indoor public places.
Since that time, the ordinance has been expanded and also includes:
Outdoor dining areas and bar patios
Transfort’s public transit facilities, shelters, benches and platforms
All hotel and motel rooms within city limits
City parks, trails and natural areas
City facilities and their grounds (including city-owned golf courses, the Lincoln Center and all recreation facilities)
Large events and festivals that require a city-issued special events permit
Downtown smoke-free zone that includes Old Town Square and Oak Street Plaza (a detailed map is posted at fcgov.com/smokefree)Electronic smoking devices are prohibited in all places where conventional smoking is not allowed. The current regulation also prohibits smoking within 20 feet of doors, which will remain in effect for all businesses outside of the downtown zone.
Some people get a kick out of taking selfies under or around a smoke-free sign as they smoke. These, of course, end up shared on social media, according to a recent memo to City Council from folks charged with enforcing the zone.
